Dwight Leon Keeney, 93, a 66-year resident of California and a two-year resident of Yucca Valley, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Sky Harbor Care Center in Yucca Valley, California following a brief illness. He leaves his son Larry Bowman and his wife Sara; his son Daniell Keeney and his wife Chris; his son Lavon Keeney; his daughter Laura McDowall and her husband Greg; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Mr. Keeney was born to Raymond & Ethel Keeney of Chariton, Iowa on July 4, 1923. He liked to tell people he was a firecracker because of his birthday. All six of his siblings, his parents and his life partner Nina preceded him in death. He attended Burlington High School where he graduated in 1943. The same year he married his first wife Betty Bowman on June 27.

He joined the United States Military shortly after he turned 20 on July 14, 1943.
He was honorably discharged December 10, 1945, as a Boilermaker Third Class. He was a WWII Veteran and serve aboard the USS Jenkins, a Fletcher-class destroyer.

Upon returning to the US after the war he worked briefly as a taxi driver in Milwaukee. He was divorced from Betty in 1947. He married Joyce Henderson in Waukegan, Illinois on April 7, 1950. They moved to California in 190. He and Joyce were divorced in December 1966. His third wife was Marjorie Turner. They were married on December 22, 1967. Dwight’s final life partner was Nina Peters. They were together from 1983 to her passing in May of 2012. Dwight worked as a real estate agent and later as a machinist for Emco until he retired in 1988. He enjoyed traveling with Nina, fishing, and planting roses. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He told many stories of his life in the Navy and will be sorely missed.

A memorial service was held at 10:45 am. On Tuesday, December 20th, 2016 at Riverside National Cemetery.

Dwight was inducted into the Navy 14 July 1943 and received his separation papers and an Honorable Discharge on 10 December 1945 at the U.S.N. Personnel Separation Center N.O.B. T.I. San Pedro, California, at the time of his induction he lived at 1013 S. 13th St. in Burlington, Iowa. He was married to his first wife Beatrice Mae Bowman and was employed at Murray Iron Works of Burlington, Iowa at the time he was a Boilermaker Apprentice while working for the Iron Works, he was only there for a short time from February 1943 through June 1943. He service included his training at the Naval Training Station in Farragut, Idaho Boat Repair Unit, Navy 131 and aboard the USS JENKINS (DD447). While in the service he held the following ratings: AS, F3c, F2c, F1c, his final rating was that of BM3c (Boilermaker third class). Upon separation, he received a total payment of $104.93 including a travel/mileage allotment of $99.75. Under remarks on the separation papers the following is listed; Victory Medal World War II, Philippine Liberation 2 stars, Asiatic Pacific 4 bronze stars American area. He moved to Califonia in 1950 and lived in this state until he passed away.
