George Washington Bell was the son of Fielding Bell (1792-1858) and Jane (Carroll) Bell (1789-1844), natives of Kentucky. Fielding Bell Sr. fought in the War of 1812. He came to Clay County, Missouri in 1836 and began farming.

George Washington Bell fought in the Mexican War in 1846 with the 1st Regiment of Missouri Volunteers under Col. Alexander W. Doniphan.

George also fought for the Confederacy in 1862 in the Civil War in the 61st Regiment EMM under Capt. Patton.
