Served with British Army in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) in the Boer War, lived in America, served as secretary to British Embassy in Guatemala, took commission in 8th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1914, promoted to rank of Captain within a few months and then to Major in Feb. 1916. Awarded Distinguished Service Order for actions at Battle of Guinchy which received personally from King George V in Buckingham Palace on 10 Oct. 1916. By 1918 he reached the rank of Brigadier-General and awarded the Companion of St. Michael and St. George.

On death of his father Sir Henry Bellingham on June 9, 1921 he inherited the baronetcy.

In 1925 elected a Senator and victorious in three subsequent elections, serving until Senate abolished in 1936.

Served in WWII with Royal Air Force and later in occupied Germany in 1945-46. Died in a Dublin nursing home.
