John was born February 29, 1935 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas and Dorothy (Swartwood) Tait. He and Joyce Cox were united in in marriage August 29, 1949, in Indiana. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy, during World War II. He began his career as a fireman, where he shoveled coal for the railroad, and went on to become a Certified Locomotive Engineer. He worked for Grand Trunk Western Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1993. John was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the American Legion #158 and the VFW, #1452.
John leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 60 years Joyce, son David & Dawn Tait, three grandsons, David, John and fiance' Rachel and Michael, and granddaughter, Yosha, three great grandchildren, Alexa, Jager, and Jada, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Tommy. Friends may share a memory with the family at the funeral home.
