Guri Mikkelsdatter (Holo) Holen was the daughter of Mikkel Olsson (Holo) Holen b. 1801 and Ragnhild Henriksdatter Torshaugen 1815 - 1885. She was born on August 10, 1841, in Valders near Etnedal, Norway.

Guri married Johan Mikkelsson Oye or Oen on December 26, 1866, in Etnedal, Valders, Norway. They moved onto the Holen farm, and took on the last name Holen. Johan operated the grocery store and Guri managed the dairy farm. They milked cows and goats, making butter and various kinds of cheese. Girls were hired to do the milking and care for the livestock.

The first six of their ten children were born in Valders, near Etnedal, Norway. They were Olia or Olea (Lena), Siri (Sarah), Randi (Mattie), Maria (Mary), Ingeborg Belle (Isabelle), and Martin.

In 1880, Johan went to America and settled in Franklin County, Iowa. He took on carpentry work to earn money to pay for his families' passage to America.

In 1881, he had earned enough money to bring his wife Guri and their six children to Iowa. They lived on a farm near Popejoy, in Oakland Township, Franklin County, Iowa. On this farm their next four daughters were born, they were Julia (Allie), Tilda or Tillie (Louise), Mena (Minnie), and Gurina (Josephyn or Josephine).

In 1887, the family changed their last name from Holen to Holland.

In America Guri went by the name Julia or Gertrude Holland.

Julia Holland passed away on March 24, 1923 in Dows, Franklin County, Iowa, and the church records say she was buried on April 29, 1923.
