Frederick Henry "Slugger" Allison, 73, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2016.

Slugger was born June 7, 1943 in St. Petersburg, FL to the late Avery Vernon and Cherry Merrill Allison. His family moved to Montgomery, AL where he spent his childhood exploring the outdoors and playing Cowboys and Indians while riding horses through the fields. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1962 where he was a standout for the Generals football team, and active in several school clubs and community organizations.

Slugger joined the Marine Corp Reserves for six years, and served in the AL National Guard for four years. He attended college at Troy State and Livingston State Colleges for two years majoring in business before joining the Montgomery Police Department in 1969. After five years with the police department, he began his career with CSX where he served as president of the local railroaders union, and retired after 34 years as a locomotive engineer. He maintained his connection with his railroad brothers by attending regular meetings of the A&WP Retired Railroaders Group.

Slugger moved to Wetumpka to be surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors he loved as a young boy. He was an avid hunter, and took pride in the gardens he produced with his sons around their home. His love of nature extended beyond hunting as often times he chose to only photograph animals and the nature that surrounded them. He loved all animals, and in his younger years he and his former wife participated in barrel racing at local rodeos with their horses.

Slugger was fascinated with history, genealogy, and was a proud member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He was an active member of the Redland Baptist Church where he enjoyed the time he spent in Sunday school, the men's ministry team, and other church activities. Slugger loved sports and remained a devoted Auburn fan until the end, War Eagle.

Slugger's devotion to his family and his church were the hallmarks of his life. He had old-school values and believed a man's word was his honor. His ability to maintain long-term friendships through every phase of his life is a true testament to his character, loyalty, and uncompromising integrity. He was blessed to be one of five children raised in a home where family always came first. Slugger cherished the large family gatherings on holidays and has passed this timeless virtue on to his children. As adults, he and his siblings found themselves separated sometimes across the globe, but distance could not break their strong family bonds. In his final months his brothers and sisters were always at his side in the hospital and the strength of their love could be felt by anyone around them.

He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Warren Allison, and his wife of 17 years, Elaine Allison.

He is survived by his children, Vince (Elizabeth) Allison, Ruthie (Chris) McKenzie, and Billy (Apryl) Lee. Eleven grandchildren, Aiden and Sarah Allison; Madelyn and Olivia Kommersmith; Dalton and Carla Dickson; Garrison, Carson and Mackenzie Lee; and Aubrey and Matt Faletto. His four siblings, Barbara (Wally) Burnham; Vernon (Crystal) Allison; Cherry (John) Byrd; Chuck (Anne) Allison, his former wife Marsha Allison and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Harold Cox and the Intensive Care and Step-Down units at Baptist East Hospital for the loving care they provided during the last few months; Rev. Bryce Cox, the members of Redland Baptist Church, and his many friends who kept him in their prayers and visited him in the hospital. Slugger's life will be forever celebrated by those who loved him. His grandchildren remind us that "Poppy is our new Christmas Angel who will watch over us and take care of us". In his remaining months, he proclaimed to anyone who was listening: "I am so proud of my family and I have lived a great life".
