Filipe was the son of Antonio Jose Fonseca (born 1806) and Rosa Maria do Coração de Jesus (1810-1864). He married Maria Francisca (1852-1894) in São João, Pico on 4 Feb 1875 at São João Baptista Church, and together they had 10 children. After his wife died in 1894, he remarried two years later to Luisa Conceição (1875-1966), and they had two children together. The children from his first marriage emigrated to the U.S., he personally escorting back 4 of the children on 2 voyages, in 1901 and 1904. Filipe's occupation was that of a mariner or sea captain. He passed away in São João in 1911.
