A celebration of Sarah’s life will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Wednesday January 4, 2017 in the Chapel (Old Sanctuary) of First Baptist Church. A private family interment will be in Greenview Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends at her home.
Sarah was very active in her early and teen years where she excelled in sports (tennis especially), sang opera on the radio, loved helping with FBC bible school, and was a majorette at Reidsville Senior High School graduating in 1944. She then headed to Salem College in Winston-Salem where she graduated in 1948 receiving a BA in Psychology and obtained a teaching certificate as well. It was there she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Midshipman Bill Bason. The two were married in 1948 and moved far and wide with Bill's service commitments. One of their most exotic posts was Kodiac Island, Alaska. While Bill was serving his country, Sarah created a kindergarten to teach the service men and women's children. Sarah and Bill departed Alaska in 1951 for the birth of their first son, William Hatchett Bason, Jr. (Chett). Sarah Marion Bason (Sally) and Samuel Clark Bason (Clark) followed soon thereafter.
Bason became a beloved teacher to many in the Reidsville Public School System as well as an instructor for Rockingham County Community College Continuing Adult Basic Education Program. While continuing as an active member in her church, she also served on the Reidsville Historic Properties Commission, President of the Reidsville Junior Service League and worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the North Carolina American Heart Association who presented her the Silver and Bronze Medallions for Meritorious Service. She was also presented in 1990 the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Her highest professional achievement came in helping to create and becoming the first Director of HELP, Inc., an information and referral agency for those in need. Helping people was always foremost on her mind as she remained committed to service throughout her life.
Sarah was an avid sports enthusiast, loved to travel, loved music, adored animals leaving behind her loyal and faithful companion Sadie, loved her home and especially her three children. She was preceded in death by her brother Dr. Glenn R Clark. She is survived by her children Chett (Martinsville, VA), Sally (Reidsville), Clark (Palm Springs, CA); grandchildren Scott Alan Barclay and wife Inga (Palo Alto, CA), Sarah Catherine Bason (Boulder, CO), William H. Bason, III, and wife Laura (Winston-Salem) and four great grandchildren. Sarah's angels on this earth and whom she loved dearly are Brona Broadnax, Savannah Morgan, Mercedes Hernandez, Marta Jaramillo, Alma Quiroz, Dorothy Nichols, and Melanie Tomaro. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to First Baptist Church or the American Heart Association.
