DEATH OF URIAH THOMAS

Another Prominent Pioneer Passed Away.

We learn with sorrow of the death of Uriah Thomas, the noted pioneer, at his home in Middleton Township, on Tuesday.

The remains were buried near Mt. Zion church on Thursday, and the funeral was attended by a very large number of neighbors and members of the G.A.R., of which order he was an honored member.

Uriah Thomas was an exceptionally intelligent and energetic man in his time, and preserved his powers to a ripe age. He aided in organizing the Pioneer society of Columbiana County, and contributed much valuable history and relics.

He was a member of Co. C. 104th Regiment O.V. Although too old for duty, he persisted in following the company and was finally enlisted as forage master, where he did much valuable service. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. The news of his heath is too meagre to give a complete account of his death, but he has been a sufferer for years from diseases of the kidneys and it is presumed this was the cause of his demise.

NOTE: He actually died on Wednesday, not Tuesday as stated in his obituary.

Obituary for Uriah Thomas

ONE BY ONE

Another of the veterans has passed into the tent whose curtain never swings outward. This time it was that well known veteran Uriah Thomas, of Middleton township. His remains were buried with honors of the G.A.R. on last Thursday. He had been ailing for some time and desolution was not unexpected. He was a man of rare attainments, posted on all the topics of the day and a useful man in his community. He was a fluent speaker, and a ready writer. Among his papers will be found the manuscript of a history and other writings that were never published. He was some seventy-five years old at the time of his death, having lived nearly all his life in the neighborhood in which he died. His funeral was largely attended; the G.A.R. Posts of East Liverpool, Lisbon and Palestine assisted his own post in the burial exercises. The funeral procession was over a mile long; showing that he was held in great esteem by his comrades and neighbors. Thus has passed away another of the pioneers of Columbiana County and one of the defenders of the union. Let his grave be kept green.
