Earl John Houston, age 85, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Beverly Health Care. Born in Heber Springs on March 25, 1919, he was the son of the late C. B. and Josie (Hooper) Houston. Mr. Houston grew-up on a farm in Cleburne County. He joined the United States Navy and was a veteran of World War II. In 1948 he moved to California and operated Earl's Cleaners, a dry cleaning business located in El Cajon. Mr. Houston continued to live in California until 1986 when he returned to Heber Springs. He was an avid gardener, who loved to grow roses and enjoyed sharing them with others. He was awarded the Yard of the Month for his gardening efforts. Mr. Houston was a member of Heber Springs First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy and Carl, and by one sister, Pauline. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise (Hassell) Houston of Heber Springs; one son, Thomas Earl Houston of Pismo Beach, California; and one daughter, Marilyn Sturges of Harpursville, New York. Mr. Houston is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 17, at 4:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Dr. J. R. DeBusk officiating. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Center Meals on Wheels Program. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
