John Rankin Alford was a pioneer citizen of the area. He was the first postmaster and was given the privilege of naming the new community on Honey Creek. He chose the name "Hico" after his hometown of Hico, Kentucky. Mr. Alford established the first store at Old Hico in 1860.
John Alford was appointed postmaster of Old Hico in 1860. In 1874, he completed the requirements for a doctor of medicine degree. He served in this area as a physician for many years.
