George “Steve” Smith, 65, died Friday, January 6, 2017, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Graveside services were held at 11:00AM on Monday, January 9, 2017 in Byron City Cemetery, with Rev. Jesse Fortson officiating. Born in Tampa, Florida, Steve retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad 2012, after 38 years of service. A resident of Peach County since 1984, he was an active community member serving the community and Peach County Schools. Steve was a passionate supporter of Peach County High School and the University of Georgia. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Roberta Wachman Smith; children, Brant Smith and Brandi Smith Fortson (Jesse); granddaughters, Sarah and Chloe Fortson; father, George Smith (Betty); mother, Norma Kruse; and sister Karen Walsh (Guy).
