George Burton Crafts, 71, a resident of Route 100, died Thursday morning, June 17, 2004 at his home following a long illness, he was surrounded by his loving family and nurse Jane Boyd.Mr. Crafts was born in Brattleboro on Feb. 9, 1933; he was the son of the late Joseph B. and Viola Sheppard (Lyle) Crafts. Growing up in Wilmington he attended local schools and was a graduate of Wilmington High School, Class of 1951. A Korean War veteran he enlisted in the United States Air Force in December 1951 where he specialized in diesel mechanics, he was honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant in December 1955. During his enlistment he was stationed at Thule, Greenland and traveled to many outposts above the Arctic Circle where be spent three months on T-3, a weather station based on a floating island which floated within 50 miles of the North Pole. He was one of nine men who saw the temperature drop to 75 degrees below zero, with an average of 50 degrees below for the month of February 1953.Upon returning to Vermont, he joined his father in the family logging business, which he later assumed ownership of. In January 1979, he formed a partnership with his son Christopher, to continue the family logging business known as George B. Crafts and Son. He was married to Florence C. Boyd in Jacksonville on Nov. 4, 1956, they have worked side by side for many years. They traveled to all 50 states, which he considered one of his greatest pleasures. He was a 41-year member of Social Lodge No. 38 F&AM and had served two terms as master in 1966 and 1977. He was also a member of American Legion Post 13 and the Moose Lodge both in Bennington, in earlier years he had been a Scoutmaster for the Wilmington area Boy Scouts. He took great pride in being a woodsman, a hunter and a fisherman. He enjoyed his camp in Somerset, attending annual fairs, camping with his pick up camper and dancing with his wife.He leaves his wife of 47 years Florence D. Crafts of Wilmington; two sons, Alex B. Crafts of Maine and Christopher M. Crafts of Wilmington; a daughter, Julie C. Moore and her husband Brian of Wilmington; a sister, Martha Pardee of Lady Lake, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Beth Crafts and her fiancé Silas Knapp of Wardsboro, Jericho Joseph Crafts and his fiancé Nicole Fowler of Jacksonville, Nicholas Merton Crafts and his wife Shirah of East Dover and Nathan Lewis Moore of Wilmington; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. -
