Virgil was born in Seaford, Delaware on August 13, 1916 to Robert and Radie (Messick) Allen. He grew up on their family farm with three siblings amidst frequent gatherings of his extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.
After graduating from Seaford High School, Virgil worked as a long-distance truck driver, delivering Delaware produce and poultry to New York City and Philadelphia. In 1942, he joined the workforce of the Dupont [sic] Nylon Plant in Seaford. He served in the US Army 6679th Quartermaster Trucking Company in Italy and Switzerland; and was honorably discharged as Corporal on August 25, 1946. He married his bride, Lola Louise Smack, on August 31, 1946.
Virgil worked at the Dupont [sic] Company’s Power House as a skilled refrigeration mechanic for nearly 40 years. The friendships cultivated during those years of comradery [sic] lasted well past his retirement in September of 1980.
Virgil was a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Seaford, Delaware. He was a Lay Speaker of the United Methodist Church, witnessing to the Christian faith and, following the example of both parents, taught adult Sunday School classes for several years.
Virgil loved to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and summer days at Rehoboth Beach.
He is survived by his loving wife, Louise, daughter, Vicki Allen; grandson, Dr. Todd Allen Pepper, two sisters, Catherine Lyons and Jeannette Lynch, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and brother, C. Granville Allen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, 609 East King Street, Seaford, Delaware at 2:00 pm with Reverend Jon Sutton officiating. Burial will follow at Oddfellows [sic] Cemetery in Seaford. The family will greet friends at the Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Friday, January 13, 2017....
