Robert P. Akers, 89, of 418 Clinch Street, died in Holston Valley Community Hospital at 5:29 p.m. Saturday [14 NOV 1964] after an 18-month illness.
Born in Russell County, Virginia, he had lived in Kingsport 45 years. He was employed by General Shale Products Corporation before his retirement, several years ago. He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ray [Rhea] Housewright Akers; daughters: Mrs. Willie Ray Myers and Miss Betty Sue Akers, both of Kingsport; sons: John of Norfolk, Virginia, and James of Kingsport; step-daughters: Mrs. Dotty Honaker, Mrs. Ruby Wilson of Kingsport and Mrs. Juanita Castle of Bristol; step-son, Luther Wallon of Kingsport; a half-sister, Mrs. Emma Ketron of Kingsport; half-brothers: Rev. Jim Akers and Rev. George Akers of Kingsport, and John Akers of Bristol; 6 grandchildren, 11 great-children and 19 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday [16 NOV 1964] at 2:00 p.m. at the Old Union United Methodist Church in Hawkins County [Church Hill].
Rev. Vick Murray and Elder G. W. Akers will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will remain at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home until the hour of services.
