Retired Chief Master Sergeant Hubert E. Barbour, 71, of Waynesboro, PA, died at 11:15 A.M. Friday, June 21, 2002, in his home. He had been in failing health since January 2002 and critically ill for the past three months.
Born April 16, 1931 in Johnston County, NC, he was the son of the late Hubert B. and Mary C. (Johnson) Barbour. He lived his early life in North Carolina.
Mr. Barbour graduated from Smithfield High School in Smithfield, NC with the class of 1950.
He and his wife of over 51 years, Mrs. Katie L. (McLamb) Barbour, were married on April 21, 1951 in Dillon, SC. They moved to the present residence in 1975.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 until 1982 with assignments taking him to Georgia, Okinawa, South Carolina, Maryland, Germany, and Hawaii. During his career, he was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Medal, seven Air Force Good Conduct Medals, four Bronze Loops, two National Defense Service Medals with one bronze Service Star, the Korean Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, seven Air Force Longevity Service Awards with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the N.C.O. Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and the United Nations Service Medal.
He retired in 1982 as Chief Master Sergeant Computer Systems Manager after 31 years of continuous active service.
Following his retirement from the military, Mr. Barbour was employed part-time by Hagerstown Junior College for three years as a data processing teacher. He also serviced as Washington Township auditor from 1994 until 2002.
He attended Rouzerville United Methodist Church in Rouzerville, PA. He was a member of Hillcrest Lodge #397 Ancient Free & Accepted Mason in Dalzell, SC, Honolulu Scottish Rite Bodies, Aloha Temple Clowns, and Aloha Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., all of Honolulu, HI, Rouzerville Lions Club of Rouzerville, Air Force Sergeants Association, and National AARP.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Teri R. Barbour, Greencastle, PA; three sons, Bryan M. Barbour, Normal, IL, Bruce A. Barbour, Waynesboro, and Jeffrey S. Barbour, State Line, PA; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five sisters, Laverne Hughes, Smithfield, NC, Evelene Lassiter, Candler, NC, Eleanor Price, Garner, NC, Veronica "Ronnie" Johnson, Stokes, NC, and Freda Fail, Princeton, NC; four brothers, Lincoln Barbour, Mellie Gene Barbour, Larry Barbour, E.J. Barbour, all of Smithfield, NC; two aunts; and a number of nieces and nephews.
