Chester C. Yingst, 73, of 611 Clayton Avenue, died at 3:50 PM Wednesday, at the Newton Baker VA Center, Martinsburg, WV. He had been in failing health since 1975, and was critically ill since being last admitted in the VA Center five weeks ago. He was born in Lebanon, July 19, 1906, son of the late Rufus and Sally (Reigel) Yingst. Most of his life was lived in Waynesboro. He was a graduate of the Waynesboro High School with the class of 1930, and later attended the University of Pittsburgh. He served with the U. S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, and was a Captain. He & Mrs. Yingst were married February 1, 1942, and had lived at the present residence the past 35 years. In 1948 he and his wife opened Yingst's Tavern at the corner of Fifth and Broad Streets. They continued to operate the business until 1957. Prior to his retirement in 1973, he was employed in the statistics department at Letterkenny for 16 years. For a number of years he was a licensed PIAA Official and officiated both basketball and football in the central Pennsylvania area. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, a member of Acacia Lodge No. 155, AF & AM, Thurmont, the Consistory and Zembo Temple Shrine, both of Harrisburg, BPO Elks, VFW, American Legion, Eagles Club, Inc., ATH&L Fire Company, and the Waynesboro Shrine Club. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Frances (Little) Yingst, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Sally M. Yingst, at home, and two sisters, Miss Mabel I. Yingst, Lebanon, and Mrs. Sara M. Strohecker, Harrisburg. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by 3 brothers, Earl D. Yingst, Minerva, Ohio, and Paul J. and Robert R. Yingst both of Lebanon. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 2 pm, in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of Rev. Howard Smith. Burial will be in the Quincy Cemetery. There will be no viewing, however family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Waynesboro Little League, c/o Brian Shook, 27 Price Avenue, Waynesboro.
