GLENN JACKSON MITCHELL, 83, died August 30, 2006 in Memphis, TN. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 5 and funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 6 at Roller Family Funeral Home. Mr. Mitchell was born May 5, 1923 in Shreve, AL. Glenn enjoyed a diverse career in civil and military aviation beginning in 1942 when he joined the Navy. His wide range of abilities enabled him to serve in a variety of aviation roles. These included gunner, bombardier, co-pilot, pilot, crew chief and flight engineer. His expertise was sought in 1944 to help analyze the captured German V-2 rockets. He served the nation in WWII, Korean Conflict and Cold War. Glenn also participated in the Navy baseball league. After 21 years of service to his country, Glenn refocused his attention to his family. He worked a second job in civil aviation in order to obtain a commercial pilot license prior to his retirement from the Navy in 1962. This was the beginning of his civil aviation career that spanned 42 years. His civil career culminated in the receipt of the prestigious Charles Taylor Master Mechanics Award. During this time, other accomplishments included serving as Scout Master, Little League Coach, member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and participated in the men's baseball league. His passion for golf and love of his family and friends led to his establishing the annual Alan Godwin Golf Scramble benefiting cancer research. He leaves his wife, Caroletta Terrell Mitchell; a daughter, Carol Lee Cox; two sons, David Alan Mitchell and Mark Terrell Mitchell; a sister, Bertha Welch; a brother, Earl Mitchell; and two grandchildren, Valerie Mitchell and John Mitchell. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to: Help Hospitalized Veterans, 36585 Penfield Lane, Winchester, CA 92596 or Southeast Indian Foundation, P.O.
