Funeral service for Darlene Evelyn Fregien, 77, of Enderlin and formerly of Monango will be 10:30 am, Monday, January 23, 2017 at Church of the Nazarene in Ellendale. The Rev. Andra Kee will officiate.

Darlene died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Ashley, ND.

Darlene Evelyn Middlestead, daughter of John and Emily (Schneck) Middlestead was born May 22, 1939 at Merricourt, ND. Darlene grew up in Merricourt and went to country school through the eighth grade. As a teenager she moved to Jamestown to live with her older sister Clara and work at the state hospital.

Darlene was united in marriage to Herbert Fregien on October 20, 1957 in the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Ellendale. They purchased a farm northeast of Monango where they raised small grains, Hereford cattle, rams, bottle pigs and lots of poultry. Later on she made crafts and they traveled all over North Dakota selling them. Darlene usually had two or three jobs, some of those were at the C-Store in Edgeley, cooking at Monango Public School, Prince of Peace Care Center in Ellendale, The Nodak Café and The Octagon Restaurant. When she wasn’t working, Darlene enjoyed fishing, gardening and canning. Herbert died January 21, 2005. Darlene had a major health incident on January 1, 2001 and has been in nursing home care since. First living at Good Samaritan Society in Oakes for 13 years and then Maryhill Manor in Enderlin for four years.

Grateful for have shared Darlene’s life are her three children, Jeff Fregien of Monango, Karen Hintzman of Fargo and Twyla (Randy) Laufenberg of Alice, ND; four grandchildren, Kay (Chris) Kelly of Wyoming, MN, Carl Hintzman of Jamestown, Nikki Laufenberg of Fargo and Kelsey Laufenberg of Fargo; four great-grandchildren and six sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Darlene’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Jim Heinrich, Donald Middlestead, Tom Dafnis, Tim Smith, Edward McDonald and Larry Genter.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with arrangements.
