Ariana Afghan Airlines Flight 701 was in a fatal air accident at Fernhill near Gatwick Airport on 5 January 1969 . A Boeing 727 with 62 people on board crashed into a house on its approach to London Gatwick Airport in heavy fog - roughly 1 1⁄2 miles from the runway.
It was found that through pilot error the flaps were not extended to maintain flight at final approach speed.

Forty-eight passengers and crew were killed . Also killed were two adult occupants in the house which was destroyed by the impact. A baby in the house survived with minor injuries.
The captain, first officer, flight engineer and eleven passengers of the aircraft also survived.

Apart from one person all the passengers and crew on this flight were from Afghanistan , Pakistan and India .

This memorial stands in the Muslim Section of Brookwood Cemetery very near the New Chelsea Hospital Plot.
