Westville- Alfred Lane Matheson, Acadia Ave., ex-mayor and a well-known and highly respected citizen of this town, died at his home Sunday after a long illness. Mr. Matheson was in his 71st year and was born at Truro, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. Burdock Lane. His childhood was spent in Cape Breton,coming to Westville after the First World War.
A miner all his working years he retired with the closing of the MacGregor Mine at Stellarton some sixteen years ago. He was a veteran of the two world wars, serving in both Canada and overseas. He served the Town of Westville for 22 years, 14 as a councillor and eight as mayor during which time he was an active committee member for the N.S. Union of Municipalities and Mayors. He was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, a Past Grand Master of the LOL of Nova Scotia and a Past Grand Master of the Royal Black Preceptory, and a member of the LOBA and of Western Star Lodge, No.50, AF and AM.
He is survived by a son, William E. Matheson, Halifax; a daughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Robert Pushie), and an adopted son, Robert A. Matheson, both at home; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lena (Mrs. G.M. Coxom), Mass, USA; and Margaret (Mrs. M.J. MacDonald), Framingham, Mass.
