Elsie Louise Haygood Mish

In the crisp early dawn of Saturday, December 22, 2007, Elsie Mish left Eureka and went to take her place in God’s Choir of Angels.

A native Californian, Elsie Louise Haygood Mish was born on June 23, 1932 in Los Angeles, the daughter of Henry Allen Haygood of Texas and Calle Verletta Evelyn Powell of Nebraska. She attended North Corona Elementary and North Corona Junior High schools while helping her eleven siblings raise the younger ones. Elsie married the love of her life, Jack Jacob Mish in 1947 and started a new chapter in her life by beginning and building their own personal and extended family. Although they raised only three daughters of their own, she collected and mothered many others - nieces, nephews, neighbors, classmates, including even some of her caregivers in recent years.

For many years, she provided the daily ride to and from school for a station wagon full of neighborhood children. She participated in Girl Scouts and Brownies with her daughters and the Democratic Club of El Monte with her husband. She participated as a member, President, and then Past-president of the Grandmother’s Club with a Purpose while residing in Sacramento for 23 years. After moving to the Silvercrest Residence in Eureka in 1992, she became a member of the Disabled American Veteran’s Auxiliary and was a desk volunteer at the Silvercrest Residence for many years.

Elsie definitely left the world a better place by having been here. Friends will remember her bright smile, beautiful eyes, and her persistent reminder to treat others the way you want them to treat you. Elsie enjoyed her life, playing cards, games and people watching. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents Henry and Calle Haygood; brothers Joe Haygood, Bill Haygood, and Robert Haygood; sisters Velma Page, Mabel Duncan and Hazel Ogilvie; and her daughter Loretta Jean Warner. Elsie is survived by Jack Mish, her husband of over 60 years, daughters Theresa and husband Duval Lamp of Missouri and Charlene and husband Don McCombs of Eureka; sisters Florence Mish, Zella Tate, and Lois Schneider, brothers John Haygood and Jim Haygood and their families. Grandchildren - Rebecca Miller and husband Robert of St. Joseph, Missouri; Deanne Carroll of Eureka; Ronald Paul Warner II and wife Edilaine of Marietta, Georgia; Tanya Jean Warner of El Centro; and Crystal Dawn Warner of Santee. Great-grandchildren - Jacqueline and husband Jonathan Barnett, Spenser (was Spencer) and Thea Miller (was Lamp;) Tiffany and Christopher Carroll-Daniel; and Justin, Joshua, and Ella Jean Warner. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the Eureka Health Care and Rehabilitation Center at 2353 23rd Street in Eureka, who provided Elsie with excellent care while she resided there. Also to all of her IHSS caregivers including Margie, Sarah, Amy, Dawn, Apple and others who have been so much help with the needs of our beloved wife and mother.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of her life at the Silvercrest Residence dining facility on Saturday, January 5, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. hosted by Elsie’s family. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Eureka.

Those who wish to contribute to her memory are asked to donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of their choice.
