An area resident all of his life, he was born June 11, 1931, in Jamestown, the son of Horace and Dorothy Clarke Zahn.
He was a graduate of Southwestern High School, and a 10-year veteran of the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He was a real estate broker for many years, and founded and owned Zahn Real Estate. He earlier founded and owned Rolling Hills Real Estate for 10 years and Carpenter-Bacot Dry Cleaners for 23 years. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where he served as a trustee. His other memberships included the Greater Jamestown Board of Realtors, serving as president 1987-88 and 1996-97; Chautauqua County Board of Realtors, serving as past president and the only recipient of the honorary life membership; Mount Moriah Lodge 145 F&AM as a 32nd degree mason; Jamestown Consistory, Benevolent Protected Order of Elks 263, Kharram Grotto, War Vets Recreation, Ingjald Lodge 65 IOV, Chi Sigma Chi fraternity and Jamestown Area Bowling Association, where he had been president. His life memberships include Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion and the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, serving as past president and treasurer. He was very involved in politics serving with the town of Busti Republican party committee, chairman of the town of Busti Planning Board, town of Busti councilman, and the town of Ellicott councilman and deputy supervisor for nine years. He was also one of the founders of Jamestown Midget Football.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ann Martenson, with whom he celebrated their 52nd anniversary Feb. 10, 2004; two sons: Richard Zahn Jr. and Douglas Zahn, both of Jamestown; two daughters: Cindy Basile of Jamestown and Nancy Heintzelman of West Ellicott; seven grandchildren: Jerod and Zachary Zahn and Jordan and Jason Basile, all of Jamestown, Sara and Lisa Heintzelman, both of West Ellicott, and Julie Rogerson of Fredonia; a great grandson; and a sister, Priscilla Mason of Greenhurst.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Richard T. Schaffer, pastor, will officiate.
