It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Viola Laura Gerhardus. She was 94 years old and living at Sommerset West Assisted Living in Gladstone, OR. She was born close by in Oregon City on July 24, 1922 to parents Christina (Stark) and Alexander Fox. She was the first girl in a family of seven children.

Vi and Quenton "Danny" Knight were married on Feb. 24, 1937. They lived in Portland and together had seven children. She was widowed in 1948 when Quenton was killed in a truck accident in CA. Neighbors helped her manage until she met Raymond Gerhardus and they were married on July 29, 1950. Ray and Mom were hard working parents with clear values and selfless devotion. They had a son Raymond H. Gerhardus in 1953.

After the three older kids moved out, the family built a house in Clackamas in 1960 on part of the family farm. Vi and Ray took vacations to visit family in Calgary and Palmdale, CA. There was always a crowd of aunts, uncles, and cousins during the holidays and trips to the beach. For their 25th wedding anniversary they were able to achieve a dream of visiting Hawaii.

When it was time to retire, they moved to Bend, OR. That was a lifestyle choice that included Vi building a fire in the wood stove each morning and Ray clearing the snow and splitting wood. Ray died in 2000 and it was then that Vi moved back to the Willamette Valley.

She is survived by her sons David (Dalyce) Knight of Ontario, OR; Ron (Linda) Knight of Sun City West, AZ; and Ray (Pam) Gerhardus of Gladstone, OR. There are 16 grandchildren and 19 greats with more to come.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, daughters Barbara, Laura, Charlotte, and Annette, and son Daniel.

Vi will be dearly missed, but always remembered by her smile, her lovely laugh, tenacity, and unconditional love. Services will be held on Tues. Jan. 10, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Gresham Funeral Chapel 257 SE Roberts in Gresham.
