Mary Jane Brailey was a member of First Nations and was born 1881 in the Shuswap area of British Columbia.

The Weekly Inland Sentinel (Kamloops, British Columbia) Friday December 4, 1896 Page 6 reports the mistreatment of Mary as a young Metis child.

"After the death of her father in Sep 2, 1884, she was left to the care of their rancher neighbour, Joseph Null. In Dec 1896, when Mary was about 16, Null took Mary to the Kamloops Government office. She was an orphan, penniless and in very poor health. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and then admitted into the Kamloops Provincial prison since there was no place to provide care for her. There were three other women in prison that were convicted of various crimes."

Henry Fowler rescued Mary from prison and they were subsequently married on Jan 8, 1897. They had three children, Charlotte Mary (1897), Beatrice Margaret (1898) and John Lee (1903).

Mary left the Shuswap area and her husband, Henry Fowler sometime after the birth of their son, John Lee Fowler (1903). According to family memories, her whereabouts was never known after her departure.

One researcher reports that Mary Jane Brailey was also known as Mamie Jennie Wilson who later died as a patient (1911 Census) in an institution in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada. The BC Death Index documents death date of 29 Mar 1918.
