Daughter of George Allen Corbin and Mary Jane Beebe of New Carlisle, Quebec, Canada. Sister of Phebe Georginia Corbin, George A. Corbin, William Langley Corbin, Everett A. Corbin, and Emma Milne Corbin.

Mary Jane's mother died 13 days after "Minnie" was born in New Carlisle, Quebec, Canada. She lived with her maternal grandmother a few years until her father moved the family to Nova Scotia. She was called "Minnie" but didn't know why she was given the nickname. Her father remarried a second time to Jane Farquharson who loved and treated Minnie as her own child. Lame in one leg due to a childhood injury, Minnie wore a brace when young and walked with a lifelong limp. She worked as companion/caretaker for elderly women in Dartmouth, NS and later in Dorchester, near Boston, Massachusetts. Minnie always longed to see her mother's relatives and kept up active correspondence with faraway relatives. In 1915 she finally visited her birthplace and the Beebe relatives still residing in the area. She immigrated to the USA in 1926 and became a naturalized citizen in 1945.
