Ellen Gertrude ("Nellie") Roche was born 4 October 1850 at New Bedford, Bristol Co MA (per certified birth certificate from City Clerk, New Bedford MA Birth Records Vol. 1, p. 49, no. 190). Her mother's name was spelled "Drainer" but it has been seen in other places, on other documents as Drimon, Driner, etc. Her birth year may have been 1851 (per an honorary family chart, or scroll).

Nellie married Walter Leslie Hopkins Sr. (Memorial #38937319 (Doug Robinson) (per marriage license dated 30 Apr 1869) at San Andreas, Calaveras Co CA. They were married on 2 May 1869.

Nelie & Walter had the following children:
1) Gertrude Frances Hopkins, b. 1870.
2) Amy Agnes Hopkins (1871-1946).
3) Vincent Hopkins (1874-1973).
4) Walter Leslie Hopkins Jr. (1876-1881).

When Nellie died in 1876, she left behind four children, the youngest of whom had spinal tuberculosis. Her widower, being the D.A. of San Joaquin Co CA, needed to marry again soon, and he married Nellie's sister, Mary Ann Roche.

Nellie is buried at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery (with her sister), Cemetery Lane & Harding Way, Stockton, California. Burial is in Section G. Her body was moved to this cemetery, with hundreds of others, from its original resting place. As the city of Stockton grew, the town decided it needed the land on which the cemetery was located. So, all the graves were removed elsewhere. Nellie was interred at the San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery on 3 May 1892.
