His brother in law Joseph S. Freinghuyen was a long time member of Squadron A and served with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry, in the Spanish American War. Another brother in law, Lanier J. Violett, served in Squadron A, 1929 - 1934.
Appointed by Secretary of State American Consular Agent in Syria 1915, and remained as such during the entire period of the Armenian massacres, until ordered home in 1917 at the time of the entrance of the U.S. into the war. This period was spent in taking care of Allied interest, and in endeavoring as far as the Turks would permit, to distribute relief among the Armenians from funds raised and transmitted from the United States.
World War 1, commissioned, Captain, May 13, 1918, assigned to the Intelligence Division, Washington, DC. Appointed American Military Attache on the Staff of General Sir Edmund H. H. Allenby, Commander - in - Chief of the Egyptian Force in Palestine, June 12, 1918. Participated throughout Allenby's offensive, ending with the capture of Alepppo, October 21, 1918. Ordered to Cairo as the American Military Attache at the American Diplomatic Agency. Returned to the States and discharged from the service, July 19, 1919.
Awarded the British General Service Medal
