ADVANCE - Mr. John Franklin Penry Jr. passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at his home.
He was born Sept. 5, 1932, the son of John Franklin and Pauline Wilkinson Penry.
He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and was a 1955 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was employed for five years by the Red Shield Boys Club as program director, and then for 24 years by the Integon Corp., retiring in 1984 as president of the life agency division.
Mr. Penry was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Penry McDowell.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy McAbee Penry; a son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Karen Penry of Raleigh; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Bill Arledge of Asheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Thurmond Barron of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and John Brendle of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Will and Curt Arledge and Carolyn and Kathryn Penry; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Parkway Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dan Wilkers and the Rev. Jonathan Freeman, preceded by a private graveside service. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkway Presbyterian Church, 1000 Yorkshire Road, Winston-Salem, NC, 27106. Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
