Bessie Ruth Northern Redwood was born on May 25, 1915 in Hampton, VA to the late Robert & Bessie Scott Northern. Bessie was the youngest of five brothers and one sister. Sister Redwood went home to be with her eternal father on Sunday, March 29, 2015.

She was educated in the Hampton City School System and graduated from George P. Phenix High School. She attended Hampton Institute (Hampton University), and New York University where she received a B.S. Degree in Early Childhood Education. She later received her Master's Degree from Columbia University.

Bessie loved music and was from a musical family. At the age of 3, she made her radio singing debut on WHN in New York City. She was a member of the Abyssinia Baptist Church Choir and her most requested solo was Ave Maria. In addition to being an excellent singer, she also played the piano. She taught elementary school in the New York City Public School System for 40 years until her retirement in 1983. After retiring, she moved to Hampton, VA in April 1984.

In 1941, Bessie was married by the late Reverend and Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. to Junius Redwood. They were married for 49 years until he passed away on June 18, 1991. To this union, one son, Junius Tazewell Redwood was born.

Bessie was an energetic woman who was involved and committed to the National Association of Professional Business Women's Club, where she held the position of secretary; the George P. Phenix 50 Plus Club, the Chauncey Scott Music Guild and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She and her husband also participated in the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. Sister Redwood was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Hampton where she served with the Women's Auxiliary and Helping Hands.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Junius Redwood; brothers, Felix, Robert, Chauncey, Ralph and Joe Northern and sister, Ida Mae Cobb. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her son, Junius T. Redwood, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Jessica, grandson, Junius, Jr. of Rockhill, SC and a granddaughter, Kaliah Redwood of New York. She also leaves behind a host of, nieces and nephews, other family members, friends, neighbors and former students.

Sister Redwood was an active woman who was full of life and love. She was a phenomenal woman who loved the Lord and touched the lives of countless children and adults alike. She will truly be missed.

Viewing will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015 beginning at noon and the Omega Omega Service of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will be held at 6:00p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 229 N. King Street, Hampton. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home.
