Tompkinsville Officer killed June 13, 1943
The body of Lt. Victor T Copeland of Tompkinsville, killed in action in Europe during 1943, is among the remains of 3,333 war dead being returned to the United States aboard the Army Transport Carroll Victory.
Copeland, a second lieutenant and Flying Fortress navigator was killed June 13, 1943. He had been stationed overseas only three months at the time of his death.
The officer attended the old Staten Island Division of Manhattan College and was a graduate of New York University. Before enlisting in the Army Air Force shortly after Pearl Harbor, he was employed by the Guarantee Trust Company, Manhattan.
Copeland received training at fields in Washington, California, Nebraska and South Dakota before getting his wings at Mather Field, California in October 1942.
He married the former Miss Janice Isaacson of Port Richmond while on leave in August 1942 and a son, Victor Thomas, Jr was born three months after the soldier's death.
