Shirley Ann Wilkinson was born in Lynnwood, California on August 8, 1925. She grew up in Lynnwood, where she attended school into early college. She was an accomplished majorette, marching in many parades with the well known “Long Beach Rainbow Girls”, including the Rose Parade.

The onset of World War II brought her to work for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, which was part of a consortium making B-17’s for the war effort.

When her family eventually moved to Vista, she met and married Raymond Thomas Betraun on April 18, 1948, and they settled in Vista. Ray worked with his father and brothers at A.E. Betraun & Sons Construction Company. After his father retired, Ray continued the business as Betraun Construction Company, and Shirley worked with him as office manager and bookkeeper. Ray passed away in May 1991.

Shirley and Ray were founding members of All Saints Episcopal Church, which was built by A.E. Betraun & Sons Construction Company. Shirley was every active at All Saints throughout her life and served for many years on the Vestry, as did Ray. She was very involved in the ongoing renovations and maintenance of the church property over the years. Both Shirley and Ray were also very active with the Vista Historical Society throughout their lives.

Shirley was a devoted and supportive wife to Ray during his lifetime. She was a very loving mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed immensely the company of her friends. She had a keen eye for detail and a wry sense of humor. She was interred on June 18 at Eternal Hills Lakeview Cemetery next to Ray.

Shirley is survived by two daughters, Vicki Betraun Schraner of Rancho Santa Fe, California and Jana Betraun Andersen of Wichita, Kansas, and one sister, Sharon Lee Logue of Cottonwood, Arizona. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Rob Schraner, Elise Schraner Thornton, Mike Schraner, Cameron Andersen and Colin Andersen, and two great grandchildren: Genevieve Thornton and Dravin Andersen, the son of Garrett Andersen, who preceded Shirley in death in May, 2008.
