Paula Marie Schermerhorn, 63, died unexpectedly on February 2nd. She went to the hospital on February 1, 2017, accompanied by her loving husband, Gary, to undergo a routine medical procedure. When events turned tragic, their six children, four son-in-laws, and four grandchildren joined them. Paula died with her family at her side.

More than anything else, Paula "Mom" was a caretaker and a best friend. At, 19 Paula married Gary Schermerhorn, her childhood boyfriend, and for the next forty-five years, she took care of him. Paula and Gary had six kids, all of whom Paula took care of well into adulthood and with each of whom she developed a friendship that far exceeded the bond of motherhood. Each of her children felt that they were her favorite.

Paula loved good music, good books, and great conversation. Her passion was the moments she shared with Gary and their kids. Paula spent a great deal of time in the car chauffeuring her kids around. The car was often a place to listen to music, to chat about books, and to have deep conversations. Wonderful memories were made on drives with her family. Paula made her home the place for family to gather. Her home was especially warm and welcoming, and when Paula became "Grandma", she shared her home with four new children whom she cared for more than was ever thought possible. For them, her home was a playground and her yard a park.

Paula was an especially strong advocate for her husband and children. She stood up for equal rights, believed fervently in the advancement of women, and laughed at all of Gary's jokes.

Paula is survived by her best friend, Gary, whom she cared for more than anyone else, her six children: Megan Seel (Brian), Adam Schermerhorn, Laura Shermerhorn, Lisa McCoy (Andy), Joann Schermerhorn (Caleb Robertson), and Andy Schermerhorn (Jack Barry), and four grandchildren: Roman McCoy, Annabelle Seel, Evan Seel, and Simon McCoy.
