On 3/23/1904, still living in Caroline County, he applied to be re-rated for a Full Disability Confederate Pension due to "Heart issues and infirmities of age." He was approved for $30 per annum.

Mr. W. J. Bates, aged seventy-six years, died at his home
near Naulakla Saturday night.
He was a Confederate soldier, member of Co. F, 30th Va. Regiment and leaves a widow and one daughter.
