MAN KILLED AT SHELBINA
YESTERDAY BY BEING HIT BY A TRAIN—EZRA AHALT, AGED 79, MET DEATH WHILE CROSSING TRACK.

SHELBINA. Mo., Jan. 24.—Ezra Ahalt, aged about 79 years, an old resident of this city, was struck by an east bound freight here yesterday morning and rendered unconscious, from, which state he never recovered and died yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock.
Drs. Vaughn and Smith attended him and stated that he died of concussion of the brain.
He was crossing the railroad track near the depot. A west bound train was leaving town, but the rear end of it was still barring his way. He saw an east bound train coming which would again bar his way about the time the other train got out of his way, so he stepped between the tracks that the two trains were on. The tracks are very close together, there being barely more than enough room for a person to stand. He became confused and in keeping away from the west bound train, was struck and knocked down by the pilot of the east bound train and almost sucked or dragged under it.
The accident was witnessed by Emmet Sparks, who reached him shortly after he was knocked down and in time to prevent him from being crushed by the wheels of the train.

Fatal Accident.
Wednesday morning about 8:30 o'clock Ezra Ahalt started to come across town from the depot. He stepped off of the depot onto the main line almost in front of a west bound freight train; someone warned him of the approaching train and he hurried on south, failing to see an east bound train on the second track, which struck him with terrific force knocking him several feet ahead of it and off of the track between the two moving trains. No one was able to get to Mr. Ahalt until the crew of the west bound train could stop and cut their train in two when he was carried into the depot and later to his home. He received prompt medical attention, but never regained consciousness and the doctors held out but little hope from the beginning and he died about four o'clock Wednesday afternoon, The engineer of the train that struck Mr. Ahalt did not get his train stopped until the engine was about opposite the mill.
Mr. Ahalt was born in Fredricktown, Maryland and would have been 77 years old March 17th. When he first came to Missouri he lived at Kirksville, moving from there to Palmyra and about 1869 came to Shelbina and had lived here continuously since. He is survived by a widow, three sons, Chas. of Pennsylvania, Harry of North Dakota and Richard of Arizona, two daughters, Mrs. R. E. Dale of Clarence who is now in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Gladys, at home. The funeral, conducted by Dr. Hanna, will be held at the family residence this afternoon.
