Mrs. Chew was born Nov. 18, 1928, in St. Joseph, and was a lifelong resident St. Joseph resident where she graduated from Lafayette high School.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and Altar Society. She was a community supporter in the Telephone Pioneers in St. Joseph, and a member of American Business Women's Association. She worked for Southwestern Bell for 32 years, retiring in 1984.
On Aug. 24,1950, she married Earl D. Chew in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James F. and Florence Gartland; a brother, James F. Gartland Jr. and a sister, Virginia Simon.
Additional survivors: two sisters, Rosemarie Magee, St. Joseph, and Gertrude Growney, Atchison.
Mass of Christian Burial: 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph.
Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Family Visitation: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Visitation: friends may call after 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society."
