Youngest child of Charles Shields Mayfield and Jennie Edith Clifton Mayfield. The family moved to Fresno in the 1940's and Harley graduated from Fresno High School in 1944.After high school, Harley joined the US Navy. He trained to be a pilot and served as a night-fighter pilot in the Korean War. Harley Dean earned the nickname "hot dog" while serving along fellow pilots, and future astronauts, Wally Schirra and Alan Shepard. Harley was a flight instructor for the Navy, serving along the East Coast and around the Gulf of Mexico.Harley met the love of his life, Roy Alice Jacob, on a blind date off the coast of Corpus Christi, Texas. Roy Alice was born November 28, 1926 in Alpine, Texas. They were married on November 8, 1952 and had 63 wonderful years together. They had four children - Courtney (d.1955), Mark, Brooke and Matthew.While still in the Navy, Harley graduated with a business degree from UCLA in 1962. The Mayfield family then spent three years overseas in London, England and Bremerhaven, Germany before returning to San Diego. Harley retired from the Navy as a Commander and proud member of the Tailhook Association in 1967.Harley then attended the University of San Diego School of Law, graduating in 1970. He was hired by the office of the Attorney General for the State of California. Harley won his 1982 U.S. Supreme Court case argument, State of California v. Ramos, with Judge Sandra Day O'Connor writing the opinion. His work encompassed many high profile cases. One of his highlights in office was speaking on the phone with labor leader Cesar Chavez. He retired from the Attorney General's office as an Assistant Attorney General in 1991.
