Deacon was born Sept. 18, 1920, to Moses and Minnie Perch Bowers in Holt and had lived in the Lathrop area most of his life. On October 25, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ava "Onnie" Greer in Lathrop and she preceded him in death in 1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, James, Raymond, Pete, and William and a sister, Etta Wilson.
He was a member of the Lathrop United Methodist Church, and former Church Board member; member of Lathrop Volunteer Fire Department having served as fire chief for 35 years; Army veteran of WWII; former city council member; former Lathrop Cemetery Association member; former citizen of the year; FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer. He had owned Bowers Cleaners with his wife, Onnie, in Lathrop for 42 years. At the time of his death, he was still a member of the Lathrop Senior Citizen's Housing Board and the Zoning Board.
Survivors include a son, Gary Bowers of Kansas City; a daughter, Jenifer Whitteck of Kearney; a brother, Walter of Lathrop and two sisters, Gertrude Clute of Lee's Summit and Velma Culver, of Lathrop; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 8, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Lathrop with burial in the Lathrop Cemetery. Bailey Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lathrop United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
