LUBBOCK - Emmett E. Broderson, age 91, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. He was born March 17, 1925, in Healdton, OK, to Emmett S. and Carrie Armstrong Broderson. He was raised on and around the Wagner Ranch near Vernon, Texas. Emmett graduated from Electra High School, where he excelled in football. A week after graduation, he began his Navy service during WWII. He was one of fewer than three hundred men who served in underwater demolition (a precursor to Navy Seals), clearing harbors and landing men in almost every battle of the Pacific. Upon learning of the many medals Emmett earned for his valiant service, the Navy Seals named him an honorary Seal. After the war, Emmett attended Hardin College (Midwestern University), playing football on the college's first team. It was here that he met and later married Sue Michael Broderson on June 9, 1951. Emmett coached football for fourteen years in the west Texas area. He became a middle school principal in Dimmitt, Texas, in 1965. His distinguished career in education was highlighted when he became Phi Delta Kappa's Man of the Year in the early 1980's. After retirement, Emmett enjoyed many years of traveling, woodworking, and wood carving. Emmett was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sue Michael Broderson; son, Kyle and his wife, Kippy, daughter, Kerry and husband, Tom Morrison, and daughter, Joylyn Broderson. Emmett (Opa) is also survived by four grandchildren: Ashley and husband, Matt Washington and their three sons, Brazos, Blu, and Bronte; Charlie Broderson and wife, Katie, Scotty Broderson, and Braydan Morrison, his partner, Keeley, and their daughter, Paizlee. Emmett also has five sisters: Fern Caraway and Mary Lou Hudson of San Manuel, Arizona, Helen Penn of Odessa, Texas, and Glenda Hooker and Jackie Youngborg of Wichita Falls, Texas. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Dimmitt on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at 2 p.m. A private burial service will be held at Resthaven in Lubbock, Texas. The family suggests donations to American Cancer Society , Alzheimer's Foundation, or a favorite charity.
