If there ever was a guy who missed his calling in life, it was Edwin. He had a natural talent for building, carpentering or cement work. He could figure angles and design and it always came out right. I know on the Padden farm he built a large hog house which we later used for chickens up on the 80 and I think it may still be standing, as well as doing a lot of mason work on the buildings on the Padden farm. However, he wanted to farm. He was very good with hogs - fair with cattle and other livestock but with his hay fever always coming during the harvest season he was at quite a disadvantage. More than once when he was just about suffocating with hay fever I took him up to Spooner or Hayward, and wasn't sure if I'd get him there in time or not, all he could do was gasp and ask for another shot of adrenaline. I often thought if he had got a little bit of a farm and raised a few hogs and went into building he could have had a lot easier life. By brother Leo Schmit
