First husband Benjamin Talmage Watkins died in 1920, leaving Nelle a widow in North Carolina to raise their twin sons, Harry and Harold. Moved to California in 1949 to be near her son Harry and family. On May 5, 1950, she married childhood boyfriend from Georgia, Simon Higdon, in Marion County, Oregon. The couple resided in Oregon several years before divorcing, at which time Nelle returned to California and resumed the surname Watkins.
