He was born in Meade County, Kentucky the son of John Kane Ditto and Julia hall Ditto. His namesake a great uncle, Joe Phillips gave to the people of Brandenburg, Phillips Memorial baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, a step-daughter; a brother, Lanson B. Ditto; three sisters, Mrs Margaret Ditto, Mrs Mary Lin Nichols and Mrs Katie Graham Woodson.
Funeral services were held February 6, 1950 with burial in the family plot in New York City.
