Merlin Biesheuvel, 84, of Sioux Falls, SD, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the Sanford Centennial Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls. Merlin Ardell Biesheuvel was born on August 6, 1932, on a farm near Corsica, SD, the son of Neil and Nellie (Hoekman) Biesheuvel. He grew up and attended rural school in this area. He served in the US Army from January of 1953 during the Korean War, stationed in Germany, until his honorable discharge in December of 1954. On January 8, 1953 he married Edna Serr at Delmont, SD. Following their marriage they lived in Wisconsin for four years and moved to the Mitchell area in 1961. Merlin farmed from 1961 until 1967. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 1967 and he began work as a heavy equipment operator for the SD Highway Department. He retired in October of 1992. After retirement he worked at Sunshine Foods from 1992 until 1997 and then Lennox True Value for several years. He was also the grounds keeper for the Misty Glen development. Edna died on July 16, 2011. Merlin was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Youth Group Leader. Merlin enjoyed yard work and collecting toy tractors. Edna and Merlin enjoyed taking bus tours of sites around the country. Besides his parents and wife, Edna, Merlin was preceded in death by one brother Gene. Grateful for having shared his life are his children: David (Leanne) Biesheuvel, Georgetown, Texas and Debbie (Kent) Herrboldt, Chancellor; five grandchildren: Carmen (Mike) Law, Leslie (Eric) Varnon, Bradley (Dana) Biesheuvel, Jason (Savanna) Herrboldt and Jessica Herrboldt; ten great-grandchildren; sisters: Donna Van Ekeren, Sioux Falls and Charlene (Pete) Van Den Oever, Lennox; plus nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, at First Reformed Church, 4800 S. Tomar Rd., Sioux Falls. SD with burial to follow at the Hills of Rest Memorial Park, Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials to charity are requested.
