Jewelle Bailey Allen was born to the union of William and Rosie Carothers Bailey in Williamson County, Georgetown, Texas. Mrs. Allen finished Carver High School, Marshall, Texas, as the valedictorian, at the ripe age of 15. She then went on to complete studies and receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tillotson College (now Huston-Tillotson University) Austin, Texas, a Master of Arts from Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas and L.L.D. from West Texas State University, Canyon, Texas. Mrs. Allen further studied towards a Ph. D. Degree at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas. While studying at Tillotson College she met Johnny N. Allen, Sr., who she wed in 1942. They were married over 60 years until Mr. Allen passed on January 3, 2003.
Mrs. Allen moved with her husband and two children, Courtney and Johnny, to the Texas Panhandle in 1948. At that time she started a teaching career that spanned 37 years beginning at Carver Junior-Senior High School and finishing at Palo Duro Senior High School. During her time at Carver, Mrs. Allen was the Girl's basketball coach in the early 50's at the Hughes Street location. When Carver moved to its new facility on 12th Street, Mrs. Allen became the Carver Annual Advisor, Carver Senior Student Council Advisor, The Dragon Newspaper Advisor and Co-Advisor to the 1964 Senior Class Officers.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Johnson Chapel AME Church which she joined in 1948 until her passing. At Johnson Chapel she taught an Intermediate Sunday School class for 34 years, served as president of the Women's Missionary Society, served as Superintendent of the Structured Summer Bible School for 5 years and served on the Trustee Board. She was a member of the Pryor Server Missionaries and member and treasurer of the Stewardess Board. Being ever the traveler, Mrs. Allen traveled to Orlando, Florida, for the Women's Missionary Quadrangle where she was Stolled as a life member. Mrs. Allen took part in special ceremonies and fellowshipped with members from all over the world.
Mrs. Allen is also a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., achieving Diamond Soror status (75 years) continuous membership. Upon her passing she became an Ivy Beyond the Wall. She was a Life Member of the NAACP Amarillo Branch and was Grand Deputy of Texas Daughters of Isis. She belongs to the Order of the Eastern Star, American Association of University Women and Delta Kappa Gamma where she received the Golden Rose Award. She was a member of the Amarillo Retired Teachers Association where she served as secretary and received the State Achievement Award in 1996. Mrs. Allen was presented with the Career Advancement Award given by Amarillo Women's Network in 1996. Her name can be found on the cornerstone of the (former) North Heights YMCA and the Jewelle Allen Stage for Performing Arts at Bones Hooks Park which was dedicated in her honor on June 14, 2008.
Mrs. Allen was feted with a surprise 90th birthday party given by her children and held at The Amarillo Club where family and friends celebrated.
Mrs. Allen leaves to mourn her passing, James Allen; her son of Amarillo, TX, Courtney O. Allen; her daughter of College Park, GA; her son Johnny N. Allen, Jr. (Buddy), her granddaughter Lisa A. Tharpe of Paris France; sister-in-law, Alice Gholston of Los Angeles, CA and a host of relatives and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to the Jewelle L. and Johnny N. Allen Scholarship fund to benefit AISD seniors, c/o Amarillo National Bank, P O Box 1, Amarillo, TX 79105.
Public visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
