Son of William and Esther Ketchum. On March 6, 1864 Silas enlisted into the Michigan Cavalry 10th Company D. He saw great suffering during the war. He kept a small journal recording each day's event. His small New Testament was his comfort. Silas contracted dysentery from which he would suffer the rest of his life. He was discharged from Memphis, Tennessee on November 11, 1865. He married Ella R. Wagar in 1872 and they made their home in Rives Township, Jackson County, Michigan. He died from bloody dysentery. When he died he left a wife of 21 years, three sons and a six year old daughter."
