Son of James Nisbet (Military Governor of Edinburgh Castle) and Agnes Woodburn of Hardhill, Scotland. He married Sarah Brevard in 1730 at Hardhill, Scotland. He and his wife sailed from Scotland to America in 1731. One son, Alexander, was born at sea. They landed in PA and made their migration south to NC.

John was named for his grandfather, the notable covenanter and martyr John Nisbet of Hardhill, who was executed on 04 December 1685 at Grassmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland for his faith as a saint and patriot of Christ in opposition of the King's reign of terror to destroy the Presbyterian Church.
