She was born on June 18, 1927, the daughter of George E. and Adelaide Mary (Sun) Smith, at Crazy Woman Creek Ranch near Buffalo, Wyoming.
Ellen was baptized on June 26, 1927.
She attended elementary school in Buffalo, Wyoming, and High School at St. Scholastica Academy in Canon City, Colorado.
In 1949 Ellen received her Bachelor's degree in teaching from Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
On June 20, 1950, Ellen was united in marriage to George Victor Fritton in Rawlins, Wyoming.
The couple made their home in Albion, Nebraska, where they raised their 11 children.
Ellen taught grade school remedial reading and math.
Following retirement, she continued to teach by tutoring English as a 2nd language and assisting inmates seeking their GED.
Ellen is survived by: her 11 children, Barbara (Mike) Romberg, Margaret (Jim) Martinosky, Mike (Tammy) Fritton, Theresa (Terry) Fichtner, Cecilia (Fred) Smiley, John (Angie) Fritton, Bill Fritton, Veronica (Mike) Trimble, Anastasia (Joel) Travis, Mary Agnes (Chris) Schafer, and Pete (Teresa) Fritton; 42 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law: J. Paul Fritton and Ed Kos; seven nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by: parents; her husband, George; grandson, Brett Romberg; sister, Mary Agnes Kranda; brother-in-law, Emil Kranda; sister-in-law, Victoria Kos; and son-in-law, Joe Krohn.
Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 17, 2017 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion.
Interment in the parish cemetery.
