Word was received by local relatives today of the death of James Slater, 821 Twelfth St., who passed away yesterday afternoon at 4:10 at the city hospital in St. Paul, Minn., following an operation. Two weeks ago he left Rock Island to visit his daughter at Amery, Wis. He was taken ill en-route and removed to the hospital in St. Paul.
Mr. Slater was born in Cedar County, Iowa, May 17, 1849. He was united in marriage to Miss Lettie Simmons, Oct. 31, 1874. The family moved to Rock Island 17 years ago and he had made his home here since. Up until the time of his death he had been employed by the Rock Island Plow Company.
Besides his wife, he leaves nine children; Mrs. Perry Reed of Amery Wis., Mrs. Albert La Fan of Hamilton, Ohio, Mrs. Jess Smedley of Chicago, Mrs. Fred Pomeroy of Davenport, Mrs. William Bergsten of Rock Island and Frank A., Ira C. and Louis A. all of this city. Eight grand children survive also.
The remains will arrive in Rock Island at 2:30 tomorrow morning from St. Paul. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home, Rev. H.W. Reed officiating. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery.
