Eleanor Horkans was born in Philadelphia and moved to New York City as a young child. On October 1, 1955, she married James Slattery in New York City. In 1960, they moved to Garden City, New York, where she lived for the rest of her life. They had three children, James, William, and Mary, and six grandchildren, Elizabeth, William, James, Thomas, Mary, and Annie.
