MUNCIE--William A. (Bill) Barnes, 75, died early Friday morning at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born in DeKalb County, the son of William B. and Freda Arthur Barnes, and spent the last 65 years as a resident of Muncie. He was a graduate of both Burris School and the Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering. While at Purdue, Mr. Barnes was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity.
Mr. Barnes was a consulting engineer with Borg-Warner for 12 years before forming McKinley Incorporated, an organization that designed, built and operated Westbrook Country Club, now Muncie Elks Club. He also traded real estate until 1973.
From 1980 to 1984, he served as the controller of the City of Muncie, the Muncie Sanitary District and the Muncie Public Transportation Corporation (MITS). While controller, he held positions as president of the Muncie Board of Works and the Delaware County Emergency Medical Service Commission, member of the Delaware County Emergency Medical Service Advisory Council, director of the Muncie Area Growth Industrial Council, financial Advisor for the Revolving Loan Fund Board and vice chairman of the Indiana Controllers Association.
Mr. Barnes had been a Rotarian for 48 years, having served in most of the positions in the Muncie Rotary Club. He served as district governor of District 6560 for Rotary International and was chairman of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians for two years. Mr. Barnes was a five-time Paul Harris Fellow and was instrumental in founding the Sunrise Rotary Club.
William Barnes served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman for eight terms. He was currently a member of the Ball Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Westminster Village Muncie, Inc., Board of Directors and Old National Trust Board of Directors.
Additionally, Mr. Barnes had served on the following boards in various capacities: Muncie Civic Theatre, Academy in the Public Service, Inc., Muncie Children's Museum, Health Planning, Inc., Retired Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Council, American Red Cross Chapter, Delaware County Historical Alliance, High Street United Methodist Church (where he was also a member), Delaware Country Club, The Columbia Club and The Edgewater Club.
Mr. Barnes served for three years on the AAA 500 Miles Race scoring and timing team and 22 years on the AAA and USAC 500 Mile Race technical committee. He was a participant in the coast-to-coast Great American Race in 1991 and 1992.
William Barnes enjoyed playing golf, flying and racing sailboats. He was a pilot holding commercial and instrument ratings.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Judith McCoy Barnes; a daughter, Anne C. Barnes; three sons, William M. Barnes (wife: Kathy), John A. Barnes (wife; Luci) and David R. Barnes (wife: Fran); eight grandchildren; a sister, Joan Nicholson; and four nephews.
Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Ron Naylor and Rev. Chris Danielson officiating. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary from 3-7 p.m. Monday.
